Eva Joly: French Magistrate and Political Figure
Eva Joly is a French magistrate of Franco-Norwegian nationality who is also a political figure. In 2009, she was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the Europe Écologie electoral coalition. On July 12, 2011, Joly was chosen as the presidential candidate of the left-wing green party Europe Écologie – The Greens for the 2012 French presidential election.
Early Life and Education
Gro Eva Farseth was born in 1943 into a humble family in a working-class district of Oslo. After placing third in the Miss Norway beauty pageant at the age of eighteen, she left her native country to pursue a law degree in Paris. While studying, she worked as an au pair for the Joly family, where she met Pascal Joly, the family's eldest son and a medical student, whom she married in 1967. The couple had a daughter, who became a lawyer, and a son, who became an architect.
Career as a Magistrate
After graduating, Joly worked as a legal adviser at a psychiatric clinic. However, at the age of 38, she decided to change her career path by entering the magistracy school. She rose through the ranks, from assistant judge in Orléans to the financial management of the Palace of Justice.
Anti-Corruption Crusader
Joly gained prominence as an economic judge. She is particularly known for her investigation of the scandalous "Elf Affair" in 1996, which resulted in the conviction of the management of the oil company Elf Aquitaine and several politicians for receiving bribes totaling hundreds of millions of euros for awarding contracts in Africa and laundering public funds.
