Early Life and Education
Alfons Miķelsons was a renowned Latvian cellist and music educator. He pursued his higher education at Moscow University's Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, graduating in 1916. Subsequently, he enrolled in the Moscow Conservatory, studying under the tutelage of the esteemed cellist Alfred von Glen. He completed his studies in 1918.
Musical Career
Miķelsons embarked on his musical career as a member of the Riga Opera Orchestra from 1920 to 1921. He then joined the Liepāja Opera Orchestra, where he performed from 1922 to 1925. In 1928, he ventured to Australia, where he resided and worked for the following two years. Upon his return to Latvia in 1929, he secured the position of concertmaster of the Latvian National Opera, a role he held until 1956.
Academic Pursuits
Alongside his performing career, Miķelsons actively engaged in music education. From 1944 onwards, he imparted his knowledge and skills as a professor at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. His dedication and expertise were recognized with the title of professor in 1959.
Accolades and Recognition
Miķelsons received numerous accolades and recognition for his contributions to the Latvian music scene. In 1965, he was bestowed the prestigious title of People's Artist of the Latvian SSR. His accomplishments were further acknowledged with the award of the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
