Early Life and Education

Born into a family of a trade representative, Klaus Döenitz pursued a career in commerce, studying from 1948 to 1952.

Naval Career

Early Service and Training

On May 12, 1952, Döenitz enlisted in the Naval People's Police, the precursor to the GDR Navy. He completed his officer training at the Naval Officer College in Stralsund from 1952 to 1954.

Commands and Staff Positions

After graduating, Döenitz served as an operational officer in the Sassnitz Coastal Sector until 1956. From 1956 to 1959, he attended naval courses in the USSR. In 1959, he joined the SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany).

Döenitz held various command positions, including:

- Navigator in the Minelaying and Clearance Division (1959-1961)

- Senior Navigation and Engineering Officer in the Volksmarine's Combat Training Department (1961-1962)

- Chief of Staff and Navigator of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Division (1962-1963)

- Commander of the Torpedo Boat Brigade in the 6th Flotilla (1963-1965)

In 1974, Döenitz was appointed Commander of the 6th Flotilla, a position he held until 1983.

Deputy Commander of the Volksmarine

From 1983 to 1987, Döenitz served as Deputy Commander for Combat Training in the Volksmarine Command.

Ministry of National Defense

In 1987, Döenitz was transferred to the Ministry of National Defense, where he headed the Volksmarine Inspection Division.

Retirement

Döenitz was dismissed from service on September 30, 1990.
