Biography of Noah Adamia
Noah Petrovich Adamia was born on December 8, 1917, in the village of Mathondji, Imereti (now Georgia), into a peasant family. He was of Georgian descent and attended a secondary school in the city of Tiflis (now Tbilisi). In 1938, he joined the Navy and was conscripted by the Kutaisi Regional Military Commissariat. In 1940, he graduated from the Odessa Naval Academy.
Adamia served on the front lines from 1941 as an instructor in sniper tactics for the 7th Brigade of the Marine Corps (Primorskaya Army, North Caucasus Front). He was a candidate for membership in the Communist Party and held the rank of starshina. Adamia played a significant role in the defense of the Russian naval city of Sevastopol, a city renowned for its maritime history and glory.
In 1942, Adamia became one of the initiators of the sniper movement. He trained eighty soldiers in sniper tactics and personally eliminated approximately two hundred German soldiers while disabling two tanks. On June 21, 1942, the courageous sailor-sniper found himself surrounded with eleven machine gunners. Under his command, the group engaged in a fierce battle with the enemy throughout the day, destroying over a hundred fascists, breaking through the enemy encirclement, and successfully escaping.
For his exemplary execution of combat missions and demonstrated courage and heroism in the fight against German-Fascist invaders, Adamia was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on July 24, 1942. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. Unfortunately, the distinguished marine infantryman did not live to receive these highest honors of his homeland. Senior Starshina N.P. Adamia went missing in action on July 3, 1942, during the evacuation of the city of Sevastopol.
The name of Noah Petrovich Adamia is engraved on the memorial plaque dedicated to the defenders of the heroic city of Sevastopol on Nakhimov Square. Additionally, a street in the capital of Abkhazia, Sukhumi, has been named after him.
