Biography of Evelyn Lauder

Evelyn Lauder is an American socialite, philanthropist, and senior vice president of Estee Lauder. She started her career as a school teacher 35 years ago, but today she is one of the most well-known and influential businesswomen in the world. Estee Lauder, the company that produces cosmetics and skincare products, sells its products in 100 countries and has global sales exceeding three million dollars.

Estee Lauder is not just a cosmetics corporation, it is also a family business where everything is carefully controlled. The founder of the Lauder family, Estee Lauder, started her business in 1946 at her dinner table in her New York apartment. With the help of her dermatologist uncle, she created formulas for four skincare creams that are still in production today. Soon after, she came up with the idea of giving free samples to her loyal customers. Before her products were sold in department stores, Estee personally went to beauty salons in New York and offered women the chance to try her lipstick while they were getting their hair done. She showed them how to apply her cosmetics, and by the time they were done with their hair, their makeup was complete. A week later, Estee would return to the same salon and by then, the women who had had a chance to try the samples for a week were eager to buy the products.

Today, Estee Lauder is over 90 years old, and the business she created is thriving. She is still involved in the company, particularly in the creation of new fragrances. The company now owns several cosmetics brands, and all members of the Lauder family work in the company. Estee's son, Ronald Lauder, leads the international division, her grandson William is the president of the Origins line, and her granddaughter Aerin is in charge of product development. Evelyn Lauder, her daughter-in-law, is the senior vice president and the face of the entire company.

Evelyn Lauder is a businesswoman, mother, wife, health advocate, photographer, philanthropist, and well-connected individual. She leads a busy life, from early morning to late evening. She starts her day with personal training sessions three times a week at 7 am. She runs, uses the stationary bike and the StairMaster, does flexibility exercises, and lifts weights. She believes that exercising is beneficial for posture and bone health. Dancing is also helpful as it improves balance, endurance, and muscle tone.

After her morning workout, she heads to the office where she oversees 800 employees. She holds endless meetings with different departments of Estee Lauder as she is responsible for creating new fragrances, from the experimental stage in the lab to selecting names and packaging for the new perfumes. She tests all new products, whether they are perfumes, lipsticks, or moisturizers, on herself. If she doesn't like them, they will never appear on store shelves.

One of her main concerns is helping women with breast cancer. Evelyn helped raise $18 million for the construction of the Evelyn Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, one of the most advanced clinics in New York. It is one of the few clinics that houses various specialists, necessary equipment, and offers different types of therapy in one place. Evelyn believes that women in Russia, just like in America, are traditionally strong, brave, and suffer silently. She wants to provide them with the opportunity to receive comprehensive medical care and improve treatment methods. She has involved numerous individuals, including former First Lady Hillary Clinton and the late Princess Diana, in her campaign. Many consider her the conscience of the Estee Lauder company.

Evelyn not only takes pride in her work but also in her family and her 38-year marriage to Leonard Lauder. She met Leonard while she was still a college student, and they started dating after he promised to call her. After getting married and expecting a child, Evelyn left her teaching career but soon missed it and was happy to enter the family business. She learned a lot about selling from her mother and Estee Lauder. She believes in connecting with customers by touching them and establishing a relationship when trying to sell something.

Evelyn has been involved in developing all types of cosmetics, skincare products, and perfumes. She can send a new product back to the lab for further improvement up to 20 times during the development process if she feels it is not good enough. However, her career in Estee Lauder had its challenges. In the 1960s, while working on the creation of the first powder blushes, one of their employees stole a sample and gave it to their competitors. They hired her and launched the powdered blushes before Estee Lauder could. Since then, Evelyn always keeps her samples locked in a safe, and they have implemented code names for all their products.

Despite being one of the most accomplished and well-known female leaders in America, Evelyn is not a militant feminist. She genuinely believes that women can achieve their life goals without making loud demands or demonstrations. She grew up with the belief that men and women are equally talented, as her mother was a co-owner of five stores with her companion being her father. She thinks it is more sensible to remain feminine while striving for what you want. Evelyn takes pride in her muscles, proudly showing them and inviting others to feel her biceps.

These days, she is busy creating a family tree and editing a documentary video of her travels for her grandchildren. Evelyn's mother's family is from Germany and Austria, while her father was born in a small village south of Chernivtsi, Ukraine. She recently visited Ukraine, where she had lunch with the wife of the Ukrainian President and visited her father's hometown. For her, it was important to visit and learn more about her family's past since she wants to share as much as possible with her grandchildren. She believes it is natural for everyone to want to know where they come from.

Evelyn's many talents and her vibrant life, filled with interesting trips, have made her a role model for ambitious working women in America. However, she says she did not consciously seek this role. She believes in old-fashioned values such as family, discipline, responsibility, and honesty. She doesn't wear a sign that says "Role Model." She just lives her life, strives to be a decent person, and do what she needs to do. She learned from her mother and mother-in-law and tries to make the world a little better.
