Early Life and Education

Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf was born in Trun, Switzerland. She is the daughter of former Swiss President Leon Schlumpf. Widmer-Schlumpf graduated from the University of Zurich in 1981.

Political Career

District Court

In 1985, Widmer-Schlumpf was elected to the District Court of Trun. She served as its president from 1991 to 1997.

Federal Council

On December 12, 2007, Widmer-Schlumpf was elected to the Swiss Federal Council, defeating Christoph Blocher of the Swiss People's Party. She took on the role of Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police.

Interim Head of the Department of Finance

In September-November 2008, Widmer-Schlumpf concurrently served as Head of the Department of Finance, replacing the ailing Hans-Rudolf Merz.

Party Affiliation

Widmer-Schlumpf represents the Conservative Democratic Party (BDP) in Swiss politics.
