Evgeny Koreshkov, born in 1970, is a decorated Kazakhstani ice hockey player and coach. His illustrious career has spanned both the rink and the sidelines.
Playing Career
Koreshkov's journey began in the Soviet Union, where he honed his skills in the youth systems of Lada Togliatti and Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk. In 1994, he joined Metallurg Magnitogorsk, where he spent the next decade as a pivotal force. Alongside his older brother Alexander, Evgeny formed a dynamic scoring duo that led Metallurg to two Russian Championship titles and numerous other accolades. His impressive performance earned him recognition as the league's Most Valuable Player, top scorer, and sniper. In addition, he helped Metallurg triumph in the European Hockey League twice and secure a Super Cup of Europe.
After leaving Magnitogorsk, Koreshkov played for several teams in Russia and Kazakhstan before finishing his career in the Swiss League B with HC Martigny. Throughout his playing days, he consistently showcased his exceptional offensive abilities, contributing significantly to his teams' success.
Coaching Career
Following his retirement in 2007, Koreshkov embarked on a coaching career. He served as an assistant coach for Metallurg-2 Magnitogorsk before taking over as head coach in 2009. Under his guidance, the team captured the inaugural Молодежная хоккейная лига (MHL) championship. This success caught the attention of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, who offered Koreshkov a role with the Russian national youth team.
Family and Legacy
Evgeny Koreshkov comes from a family with a strong hockey tradition. His three brothers, Alexander, Igor, and Dmitry, all played the sport at various levels. His father, Gennadiy, was an amateur athlete who instilled a passion for hockey in all his sons. Igor's son, Rostislav, also pursued a hockey career. Despite his own athletic achievements, Evgeny's younger brother, Dmitry, ultimately chose not to become a professional player.
