Fyodor Pavlovich Golovashko: Soviet Nuclear Test Pilot and Hero
Early Life and Military ServiceFyodor Pavlovich Golovashko was born in 1923 in the village of Bykovo, Siberia. Of Russian descent, he became a member of the Communist Party in 1951. Golovashko served in the Great Patriotic War as a long-range aviation pilot.
Nuclear Test Pilot
In 1952, Golovashko was transferred to an aviation regiment tasked with researching and testing atomic and hydrogen bombs. His exceptional skills as a test pilot saw him become a leading expert in nuclear weapon testing.
Historic Emergency Landing
Golovashko made history in 1956 when he performed the first-ever emergency landing with a live thermonuclear device on board. Due to technical difficulties preventing a guided release, he was forced to land the Tu-16 carrier aircraft.
Hero of the Soviet Union
On September 11, 1956, Golovashko was awarded the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He received the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal (number 10846) for his bravery and heroism during the air nuclear tests.
Later Life and Legacy
Golovashko retired from the military in 1961 with the rank of colonel. He passed away on October 7, 1980, leaving behind a legacy of courage and innovation in the field of nuclear testing.
