Early Life and Education
Fyodor Grigoryevich Kirichenkowas born on March 1, 1904 (February 17, 1904, Old Style) in the village of Vladislavka, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. In 1928, he graduated from the K. A. Timiryazev Maslivsky Institute of Breeding and Seed Production in Maslivka, Kyiv Oblast.
Career
Membership in the Communist Party and Professional AffiliationsKirichenko joined the Communist Party in 1929. He began his career at the All-Union Selection and Genetics Institute in Odessa in 1932, where he served as Head of the Department of Wheat Breeding and Seed Production (1932-1941, 1944-1954, and from 1959 onwards). He also became the Director of the Institute from 1954 to 1959.
Plant Breeding Achievements
Under Kirichenko's leadership and involvement, the Institute developed five high-yielding, winter-hardy, and drought-resistant winter soft wheat varieties of the steppe ecotype. Most notably, Kirichenko pioneered the creation of winter hard wheat for steppe farming in Ukraine, resulting in varieties such as Michurinka, Novomichurinka, and Odesskaya Yubileynaya, which yielded between 35-45 centners per hectare.
Publications and Legacy
Kirichenko published over 200 scientific works, including 13 books and brochures. His contributions to plant breeding earned him the title of Academician of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VASKhNIL). Kirichenko's legacy continues to shape the agricultural industry in Ukraine and beyond.
