Early Life and Military Career

Born into an aristocratic family, the Duke of Castelvare and Zoagli was an Italian admiral who distinguished himself during the 1866 War. In 1867, he joined the Italian Geographical Society.

Political Involvement

In 1882, he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies, serving in the XVth, XVIth, and XVIIth Parliaments. From 1886 to 1887, he was the Chief of Staff of the Standing Squadron.

Naval Leadership

From 1887 to 1888 and 1890 to 1893, he served as the Director General of the Arsenal in Taranto. In 1893, he became a member of the Higher Council of the Navy and served until 1894.

Ministerial Roles

In 1896, he was appointed to the Senate. The following year, he commanded the Italian squadron off Crete and the entire international squadron as the senior admiral. From 1898 to 1899, he held the positions of Minister of the Navy and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the conservative cabinets of Marquis de Rudinì and Luigi Pelloux, respectively.

Later Life and Legacy

From 1902 to 1903, he served as the Chairman of the Higher Council of the Navy. In 1906, he became the President of the Navy League, a position he held until 1909. He was also a member of the National Committee for the History of the Risorgimento, a national movement for the unification of Italy.
