Polish Poet and Artist: A Life Dedicated to the Stage
Early Life and EducationFeliks Konarski was a renowned Polish poet and artist, best known for penning the lyrics to the iconic song "Red Poppies on Monte Cassino." Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, Konarski received his secondary education at a gymnasium. In 1921, he embarked on a daring trek to Warsaw, where he earned his high school diploma and enrolled at the university.
Embracing the Stage
Konarski soon abandoned his studies to pursue his passion for the performing arts. In 1934, he relocated to Lviv, where he established a theater-review. His talent for songwriting blossomed, leading him to create several popular melodies.
Soviet Interlude
With the outbreak of World War II and the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland, Konarski worked in a Soviet jazz orchestra led by Henryk Wars. He penned the Russian lyrics for the popular tango "Forgetfulness" and the foxtrot "I Know Nothing" under the pseudonym F. Refrain.
Army Service and "Red Poppies"
Hitler's invasion of the USSR found Konarski and the orchestra in Moscow. From 1941, he served in General Anders' army, where he founded the Polish Soldier's Theater. On May 17-18, 1944, Konarski wrote the lyrics to "Red Poppies on Monte Cassino," which became an enduring symbol of Polish heroism. The song was first performed at the victorious battle site by Renata Bogdanowska, who later became General Anders' wife.
Post-War Exile
After the war, Konarski settled in London, where he founded the "Ref-Ren" theater. In 1965, he moved to Chicago, becoming a central figure in the city's Polish artistic community and hosting the popular radio program "Red Poppies."
Return to Poland Denied
With the fall of communism in Poland, Konarski expressed his desire to visit his homeland. However, he passed away on the eve of his planned departure.
