Felix Jean Guen: French politician and statesman

Felix Jean Guen was a French politician and statesman who served as the Prime Minister of France for five months from January to June 1946. He was an honorary member of the National Assembly of France.

Early Life and Education

Felix Guen completed his secondary education in the city of Marseille and then studied law in Aix-en-Provence. In 1907, he began practicing law in Marseille and in 1914, he joined the French Armed Forces after the outbreak of World War I.

Political Career

During his youth, Guen joined the Socialist Party and in 1924, he became a deputy of the French Parliament for the department of Aix-en-Provence. He became an associate and assistant to Leon Blum and in 1937, he assumed the responsibilities of Vice President of the Socialist Group.

During the German invasion, Felix Guen was among the eighty deputies who voted against the liquidation of the Third Republic. He consistently opposed the regime of Henri-Philippe Petain. Guen was one of the three lawyers who defended Leon Blum in the Riom trial initiated by Petain against his political opponents.

In the summer of 1942, to escape fascist repression, Guen fled through Spain to England, where he joined Charles de Gaulle. He led the French parliamentary group in London and after the landing of Allied forces in North Africa, he was elected President of the Consultative Temporary Assembly in Algeria. In 1944, the assembly moved to Paris and Guen remained its leader.

After the elections in October 1945, Felix Guen was elected President of the National Constituent Assembly. From January to June 1946, he served as the chairman of the coalition Temporary Government of France. After his resignation, he remained in the government as Deputy Prime Minister under Georges Bidault until December 1946. In 1947, he became the Minister of State in the cabinet of Paul Ramadier.

In 1956, Felix Guen participated as a member of the French delegation at the 11th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, USA.

Felix Guen concluded his political career in 1958 when he simultaneously resigned from all his mandates. He passed away on October 25, 1977, in Nice.
