Madeline Albright Biography
Madeline Albright was the first woman to serve as the United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001. She was born on May 15, 1937 in Prague. When she was 11 years old, her family immigrated to the United States, where her father became a professor at the University of Denver. Albright graduated from Columbia University, earning a master's degree in 1968 and a doctorate eight years later.
Early Political Career
Albright began her political career as an activist for the Democratic Party. In 1972, she joined the team of Senator Edmund Muskie and later became his legislative assistant. In 1978, she was appointed as a member of the National Security Council under President Jimmy Carter, where she was responsible for public relations. She also led seminars on Soviet politics and Eastern European countries at Georgetown University in 1982 and was the head of the "Women in Foreign Policy" program. Albright held leadership positions in several analytical groups in the presidential administration and served as an advisor on foreign policy during the presidential campaigns of Democratic candidates Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, and Bill Clinton.
Career as US Ambassador to the UN
In 1993, Albright was appointed as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, where she played a significant role in shaping US foreign policy during the military actions in Bosnia, Haiti, and Somalia. Her clear demeanor and ability to establish political contacts helped her gain supporters even within the ranks of the Republican Party.
Secretary of State
As Secretary of State, Albright gained notoriety for her tough approach to resolving foreign policy issues. One of her key decisions during the second term of the Clinton presidency was the expansion of NATO to include Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Albright was a staunch supporter of a tough stance towards Iraq and advocated for a policy of military intervention to resolve the crisis in the Balkans.
