Felix Kider: A Ukrainian and Soviet Master
Early Life and EducationFelix Kider was born on September 7, 1938, in Balashikha, Moscow Oblast, Russia, to a military family. From 1941 to 1945, he lived with his mother in evacuation in the Barnaul region. In 1952, the family moved to Novaya Kakhovka for the construction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.
From 1955 to 1959, Kider studied at the N. Samokish Crimean Art School. Subsequently, he served in the Black Sea Navy from 1959 to 1963. He then pursued higher education at the Kharkov Institute of Arts and Industry from 1963 to 1968.
Artistic Career
In 1969, Kider moved to Kherson with his family and worked at the architectural studio GIPROGrad. He participated in Kherson art exhibitions and joined the Kherson branch of the Ukrainian Artists' Fund with the support of art critic V. G. Chupryna.
From 1970 to 1973, Kider collaborated with other Kherson artists to create mosaics for the facade of the "Yubileiny" cinema concert hall. He also completed the relief composition "Evolution of the Development of Communications in Kherson" in the operating hall of the Kherson Post Office and the relief mosaic "Zaporozhye Cossacks Write a Letter to the Turkish Sultan" for the interior of the "Kazatsky" winery.
Oeuvre and Recognition
In 1974, Kider began working with the etching technique. He produced a series of engravings dedicated to Chile. In 1975, he was admitted as a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine.
From 1977 to 1987, he created illustrations for Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea," Z. Kosidovsky's "Biblical Tales," and others. In 1985, he travelled to the "Senezh" Creative House and worked with the lithography technique.
In 1988, Kider held his first solo exhibition at the Kherson branch of the Union of Artists. He continued to produce significant works, including the живописный (painting) polyptych "Legends" (1991), the still-life series "Violin" (1992), and the painting series "Askania" (1996).
In 2000-2002, he worked on a series of pastel works entitled "Nude." In 2002, he was awarded the title of "Honored Artist of Ukraine." Felix Kider passed away on June 23, 2003, in Kherson. A posthumous exhibition was held in his honor in 2003.
