Early Life and Education
Felix-Louis Calonder was born in Chur, Switzerland. He pursued legal studies in Zurich, Munich, Paris, and Bern, where he obtained his doctorate in international law in 1889.
Career in Law and Politics
Upon completing his studies, Calonder returned to Chur and served as a court secretary before establishing his own legal practice. In 1891, he was elected to the cantonal parliament of Graubünden, representing the Free Democrats, and held this seat until 1913. He also unsuccessfully campaigned for a position in the cantonal government in 1893.
Political Leadership
Calonder's expertise in transportation policy, particularly his advocacy for the Eastern Alpine Railway and lobbying for federal subsidies for the Rhaetian Railway, propelled his political ascent. He secured one of two seats for Graubünden in the Swiss Council of Cantons in 1899. During his tenure, he was entrusted with negotiating an agreement with the Grand Duchy of Baden on the use of the Rhine for shipping and hydropower. From December 4, 1911, to December 2, 1912, Calonder served as President of the Council of Cantons.
Election to the Federal Council
In 1912, Calonder became a candidate for the vacant seat on the Swiss Federal Council following the death of Federal Councillor Adolf Deucher. However, he lost the election in the first round to Edmund Schulthess. The following year, after the passing of Federal Councillor Louis Perrier, Calonder's candidacy gained stronger support. This time, he effortlessly won the election in the first round with 151 of 199 votes.
International Diplomacy
After retiring from the Federal Council in 1920, Calonder was appointed by the League of Nations as a mediator in the Åland Crisis. He also convened a conference in Geneva in 1921 to address the Silesian Uprising. From 1922 to 1937, Calonder resided in Katowice as Chairman of the German-Polish Mixed Commission, overseeing the implementation of the Geneva Conference's decisions.
Later Years and Legacy
Calonder returned to Zurich in 1937 and resumed practicing law. He passed away in Zurich on June 14, 1952. Felix-Louis Calonder is remembered as a prominent Swiss politician and international diplomat, whose contributions to transportation policy and resolution of international conflicts continue to be recognized.
