Ferdinand de Lesseps was a French diplomat, engineer, and the author and leader of the construction of the Suez Canal.
Success and Fame
The successful completion and opening of the Suez Canal brought him well-deserved fame. Lesseps became a member of the French Academy, the Academy of Sciences, and many scientific societies. He was also awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor for his achievements.
The Panama Scandal
Even the scandal involving the Panama Canal Company, which he headed, could not undermine his reputation. The collapse of this company in 1888 led to the bankruptcy of tens of thousands of small shareholders. To conceal embezzlement, abuse, and the company's dire financial situation, the management bribed French ministers, senators, deputies, and newspaper editors. The word "Panama" came to symbolize a major political and financial scandal.
Legal Troubles
After an official investigation, Lesseps and his son Charles were sentenced to five years in prison in February 1893. However, only his son served the sentence, and it was soon overturned by the court.
