Franz Anton von Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky: Statesman and Reformer
Franz Anton von Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky was an Austrian statesman who served as Governor of Bohemia and the first Minister-President of the Austrian Empire.
Early Years and Career
Born on January 31, 1778, in Prague, Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky hailed from an ancient Czech noble family. In 1809, he was appointed Colonel of Prague Castle and Oberburggraf (Governor) of the Kingdom of Bohemia.
Rise to Prominence
In 1826, Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky was appointed State Conference Minister and joined the Imperial Council of State. From December 12, 1836, he served in the Secret State Conference, heading its domestic and financial departments. He was also a member of the Regency Council and his rivalry with Metternich contributed to internal crises within the empire.
Prime Ministership
On March 21, 1848, Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky became the head of government in Austria, serving briefly until April 4. During his time as Minister-President, he oversaw the empire's response to the revolutions of 1848.
Cultural Legacy
Beyond politics, Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky was a patron of the arts and sciences. He served as President of the Royal Czech Scientific Society and founded the Czech National Museum, to which he donated his extensive collection of minerals and library.
Death and Legacy
Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky passed away in Vienna on April 4, 1861. He is remembered as an influential statesman who played a key role in the political and cultural development of Austria and the Czech lands.
