Early Life and Career
Firidun Guli oglu Aghayev was born on February 19, 1898, into a peasant family in the village of Aldere. After his father's death, he moved to Baku and began working in the oil industry as a tank cleaner and later as an apprentice mechanic.
Joining the Railway
In 1918, Aghayev joined the Baku locomotive depot, where he quickly became an assistant machinist. At the age of 22, he learned to read and write and joined the Communist Party in 1924.
Train Driver and Innovator
After graduating from the Tbilisi machinist course, Aghayev became a locomotive driver in 1927. By this time, he had already prevented over 30 accidents and derailments. In 1929, he was entrusted with driving passenger trains along mountainous routes.
Leadership and Recognition
Aghayev was a driving force behind the movement to maintain locomotives within the locomotive crew. For his contributions, he was awarded the "Shock Worker of the Stalinist Call" badge in 1934 and the Order of Lenin in 1942.
Wartime Service
As the war began, Aghayev began driving powerful, high-speed steam locomotives. In October 1943, he developed a meticulous locomotive repair schedule that eliminated the need for external assistance. He generously shared his expertise with other locomotive drivers.
Heroism and Fuel Economy
Despite the constant danger of bombing and shelling, Aghayev skillfully navigated his trains, saving countless military and fuel supplies. He initiated the practice of running heavy trains and implemented fuel-saving measures, saving over 40 tons of fuel in the first six months of the war.
Hero of Socialist Labor
For his exceptional contributions to transportation and railway restoration, Aghayev was awarded the Hero of Socialist Labor title on November 5, 1943. He was the first person in the Azerbaijan SSR to receive this honor during the war.
Post-War Career
After the war, Aghayev continued his service on the railway and was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR three times. He retired as a senior machinist at the Baku locomotive depot.
Legacy
Firidun Guli oglu Aghayev passed away on February 19, 1958, after a long illness. A street in Baku was named after him, and a memorial plaque was installed on his former residence. The Azerbaijan Railway established an award in his name.
