Fotis Katsikaris: From Coach to Head Coach of Russian National Basketball Team
Early Coaching Career
Fotis Katsikaris began his coaching career at the helm of AEK Athens BC, leading the club to two Greek Cup titles. In 1998, he joined PAOK BC, where he spent four seasons and guided the team to a Greek League Championship in 2000.
European Success with Bilbao Basket
After coaching stints with Panathinaikos BC and CSKA Moscow, Katsikaris took over as head coach of Bilbao Basket in 2009. Under his guidance, the Basque Country-based club achieved its greatest European success, reaching the Top 16 of the EuroLeague in the 2010-11 season and the EuroCup Final in 2013.
Russian National Team Appointment
In February 2023, Katsikaris was appointed as the head coach of the Russian national basketball team. The appointment sparked controversy as Katsikaris was already coaching Bilbao Basket and raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
