Francesco Venier, the 81st doge of Venice, was born into an illustrious Venetian family that had produced three other doges, eighteen procurators, and numerous generals. As the eldest son of Giovanni Venier and Maria Loredano, he inherited a substantial fortune, making him one of the wealthiest men in Venice during his time.
Early Career
Venier served the Venetian Republic in various administrative roles. He held the prestigious positions of podestà in Padua and Verona, and was also an ambassador to Pope Paul III at the Vatican. His diplomatic skills and administrative acumen earned him a reputation as a capable and respected leader.
Election as Doge
On June 11, 1554, at the age of 65, Venier was elected doge. Unlike his two elderly predecessors who required assistance to walk, he was known for his vigor and dynamism.
Achievements
During his brief two-year reign, Venier oversaw the expansion of the Venetian Arsenal, which had outgrown its original site after the War of the Cambrai League. He also strengthened the city's coastal defenses.
Legacy
Venier died on June 12, 1556, and was buried in the Church of San Salvatore. In gratitude for the numerous construction contracts he had awarded during his reign, the Sansovino workshop created an elaborate colored-marble tomb in his honor between 1557 and 1561.
