Early Life and EducationFrancis Grant, a distinguished Scottish painter, was born into an aristocratic family in Kinross-shire in 1803. He attended Harrow School before embarking on an artistic career through self-study.
Emergence as an Artist
Grant made his artistic debut in 1834 with "Milton's Breakfast" at the Royal Academy. His subsequent works, including "Melton Hunt" and "Cottesmore Hunt," established him as a sought-after portraitist. He gained acclaim for his portraits of Queen Victoria and Lord Palmerston.
Royal Academy and Presidency
In 1842, Grant became an Associate of the Royal Academy, ascending to full membership in 1851. In 1866, he was elected President of the Academy following the resignation of Edwin Landseer. Shortly thereafter, he was knighted.
Portraits of Notables
Grant's subjects included prominent figures from various walks of life. His portrait of his daughter, Anna Emily Sophia Grant, is renowned for its depiction of Victorian femininity and resides in the National Gallery of Scotland.
Legacy
Grant's brother, General James Hope Grant, was also a notable figure. Francis Grant's artistry contributed significantly to the Victorian art scene, leaving a lasting legacy as a skilled portraitist and president of the Royal Academy.
