Biography
Stephen Dowthwaite – an English perfumer, programmer, and writer; also actively involved in training and educating perfumers. He is the founder of the 'PerfumersWorld Ltd. Partnership' project. Dowthwaite has developed and implemented 'The ABC's of Perfumery' system, which includes a comprehensive scheme of scent classification. He is also known as the creator and leader of the training course 'The Art and Technology of Perfumery'.

Dowthwaite began his career in 1971 as an intern at 'Picot Laboratories' in London, England. He was fortunate to work for 'Picot', one of the last British perfume groups involved in creating, manufacturing, packaging, and supplying their own perfumery products. He trained under perfumer Kenneth Burrows and former 'Guerlain' employee Brian Maquaire.
Later, Dowthwaite joined a soap manufacturing company and became the manager of the cosmetics chemistry department at 'Grossmiths Co. Ltd.'. He then moved on to work as a perfumer at 'R. Sarant & Co. Ltd.' and later at 'Norda Schimmel Co. Ltd'.
From 1979 to 1988, Dowthwaite pursued two professions simultaneously – working as a part-time perfumer for multiple companies while also serving as a police officer in London. Surprisingly, his experience in the police force provided valuable insights and techniques that he later applied in perfumery. His systematic approach to creating fragrances, combined with his programming skills, led to the creation of the 'Perfumer's Workbook' software, allowing users to create perfume formulas based on scent descriptions.
In 1989, Dowthwaite relocated to Bangkok, Thailand, where he established the agency 'Quintessence Fragrances Ltd.'. In addition to other activities, the company conducted training for new sales professionals. In 1991, he founded the perfumery division of 'Adinop Co. Ltd.', the first perfume factory in Thailand. During the establishment of this factory, Dowthwaite utilized a prototype of his 'ABC's of Perfumery' system, simplifying and formalizing the process of designing and creating new fragrances.
From 1996, Dowthwaite worked with 'Thai-China Flavors and Fragrances Co. Ltd.' and 'Guanghouz Baihua Flavours and Fragrances Co. Ltd', with sponsorship from the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Development. During this period, he held positions as assistant director, perfumer, trainer, and technical consultant.
In 1998, Dowthwaite founded the 'PerfumersWorld' project, distributing his 'The Perfumer's Workbook' software. Recognizing the high demand for information on creating perfumes and fragrance products, Dowthwaite launched a series of university and online educational courses. He also introduced a series of masterclasses under the project 'The Art and Technology of Perfumery'. These courses have been highly praised by students and fellow perfumers, cementing Dowthwaite's reputation as one of the best specialists in training personnel in the field.
As of 2014, Dowthwaite has developed over 300 perfumery products, primarily in the categories of toiletries, cosmetics, and functional products. He is known as the creator of the fragrance range 'Fleuressence', used in the 7-step system of perfume creation called 'iSniffs'. Additionally, his aromatherapy blends are widely used in spas and body care products worldwide.
