Early Life and Military Career

Francisco Diez Canseco was born on March 21, 1821, in Arequipa, Peru, to a prominent social family. From 1835 onwards, he served as a cadet in the Peruvian army and became an aide-de-camp to General Ramón Castilla. In 1841, he fought in the Battle of Ingavi against Bolivia.

Rise to Prominence

In 1851, Diez Canseco attained the rank of colonel and served as adjutant to President José Rufino Echenique. He held the positions of prefect of Callao in 1861 and prefect of Lima in 1862. In 1865, he was promoted to brigadier general and assumed command of the capital.

Interim Presidency

During various periods of political instability, Diez Canseco served as interim president. These included:

June 27-28, 1871: During President Balta's illness

July 26, 1872: Following the execution of President José Balta and the lynching of Thomas Gutierrez, until the appointment of Mariano Herencia Zevallos as interim president

Later Career

In 1881, during the brief presidency of Francisco García Calderón, Diez Canseco served as Minister of War.
