Biography of Frantishek Gągor
Frantishek Gągor was a military figure, a Polish general, and the head of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces from 2006 to 2010. He tragically lost his life in an aviation disaster on April 10, 2010, along with Poland's President, Lech Kaczyński, when their Tu-154 aircraft crashed near Smolensk while attempting to land, just 300-400 meters from the military airfield's runway.
Early Life and Education
Frantishek Gągor was born on September 8, 1951, in the village of Konyushova, rural commune of Kozhenna, near the city of Nowa Sól, Poland. He attended the Mechanized Infantry Officer College (Tadeusz Kościuszko Military Academy of Land Forces) in Wrocław. In addition to this, Gągor received training at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the National Defense University in Warsaw, the NATO Defense College in Rome, and the National Defense University in Washington.
Military Career
During the 1970s, Frantishek Gągor served in the 2nd Tank Regiment. He later became the commander of a reconnaissance platoon and subsequently a company commander. Gągor was appointed as an officer responsible for planning and operational activities for United Nations missions. In 1978, he entered the Tadeusz Kościuszko Military Academy, where he provided training and education for the Polish contingent participating in peacekeeping operations until 1988. During his assignment, Frantishek actively participated in the United Nations Observer Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL) operations in 1980-1981 and 1985-1986.
In 1991, Gągor served as a senior officer in the Polish military contingent during the Gulf War as part of Operation Desert Storm. In 1993, Frantishek Gągor, holding the rank of colonel, led Poland's peacekeeping armed forces. He became one of the key members of the Polish Armed Forces in preparing Poland's accession to NATO. In 1997, Brigadier General Gągor was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. From the rank of second lieutenant in 1973, Frantishek successfully progressed through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and brigadier general from 1976 to 2003. In 2003, Gągor reached the rank of divisional general and on February 27, 2006, he was appointed as a general of armor, soon after which he assumed the position of General of Poland.
Personal Life
As the head of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, Frantishek Gągor was fluent in English, could communicate in French and Russian, and had a keen interest in history and English literature. He enjoyed skiing, playing tennis and volleyball, as well as jogging. Frantishek Gągor was married and had two children.
