Early Life and Musical Education
Jean-Claude Bernède was born into a musical family in France, where his father was a renowned violinist and conductor. Inspired by his father, Bernède began his musical journey at a young age.
He pursued his studies at the Lyon Conservatory, followed by the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the Paris Conservatory. During this time, Bernède developed a particular passion for Baroque music.
Baroque and Asian Musical Explorations
Bernède's love for Baroque music led him to perform with prominent ensembles such as Jordi Savall's Le Concert des Nations, Christophe Coin's Limoges Baroque Ensemble, and William Christie's Les Arts Florissants.
Concurrently, Bernède became captivated by Asian musical traditions, particularly those of the Himalayas. This fascination led him to explore the region, bringing European masterpieces to audiences in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.
Academic and Pedagogical Pursuits
In 2004, Bernède earned a doctorate in ethnomusicology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Following this, he became a professor of cello, Baroque music, and ethnomusicology at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei.
He also founded the Pedrini Center for Baroque Music at the university and established the Xingani Research Center in 2001, dedicated to preserving and promoting Himalayan musical culture.
Cultural Ambassador
Bernède's commitment to cultural exchange culminated in the organization of the "Gandharva Vidya" program in 2005. This event marked the first performance by musicians and artists from the Central Himalayas in Paris, showcasing the richness and diversity of Himalayan musical traditions.
