Franco Costanzo: A Goalkeeper's Journey

Early Promise and River Plate Dominance

Franco Costanzo began his professional career at the prestigious Argentine club River Plate in 2001. Widely regarded as one of South America's most talented goalkeepers at the time, he made 87 appearances for the team and won three Clausura championships (2002, 2003, and 2004).

European Adventures

In the 2005/06 season, Costanzo moved to Spain's Deportivo Alavés. After a brief stint there, he joined Swiss club Basel in 2006 for a transfer fee of €2,500,000. In 2008, he inherited the captain's armband from Ivan Ergic and led Basel to a Swiss Super League title and two Swiss Cups.

Basel Captaincy and International Debut

On July 17, 2008, Costanzo was named permanent captain of Basel and signed a new contract until 2011. In addition to his club success, he also represented Argentina's under-20 team at the FIFA World Youth Championship and made one appearance for the senior team at the 2003 Copa América.

Greek Glory and Later Career

Following his time in Switzerland, Costanzo joined Greek club AEK Athens in 2011. With AEK, he won the Greek Super League and Greek Cup in his debut season (2011/12). He later spent time with Millonarios in Colombia and Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in Argentina before retiring from professional football in 2018.
