Francisco de Cabarrus, Count of Cabarrus
Francisco de Cabarrus, Count of Cabarrus, was a prominent Spanish statesman who played a significant role in the financial and economic development of Spain.
Early Life and Career
Born into a wealthy family in Madrid, Cabarrus received a well-rounded education and developed an interest in banking and economics. In 1785, he founded and became the first director of the Spanish National Bank.
Royal Influence
Under King Charles IV, Cabarrus initially fell out of favor but later rose through the ranks, serving as General-Intendant of Roads and Canals and Chief Director of Royal Factories. As a representative of Spain, he participated in the Congresses of Lille and Rastatt (1797-1798).
Napoleonic Wars
During the Napoleonic Wars, Cabarrus initially supported King Joseph Bonaparte and served as his Minister of Finance. However, he later switched allegiance to the Spanish resistance movement.
Family and Legacy
Cabarrus's daughter, Teresa Tallen, married the influential French politician Jean-Lambert Tallien. The count's legacy includes not only his contributions to Spanish finance but also his role in promoting economic reform and international cooperation.
