Linda Cliatt-Wayman: A Beacon of Hope in a Dangerous School
Linda Cliatt-Wayman is the principal of Strawberry Mansion High School, located in a poor neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and known as one of the most dangerous schools in America. While America is often seen as a land of opportunities and freedom, the reality is sometimes different. Strawberry Mansion High School, situated in a partially dilapidated area, has gained a reputation as the "most dangerous school in the United States." Fights, fire alarms, and attacks on teachers are as common as homework and tests. Every day, a squad of police officers patrols the school, monitoring the halls through 94 cameras strategically placed to observe every corner. However, nothing seems to stop the daily fights within the school walls.
A Dedication to Safety and Troubled Teens
In 2013, Linda Cliatt-Wayman, who previously served as an observer for the Philadelphia school district, realized that finding a suitable principal for the school was impossible. Therefore, she voluntarily took on the position, confident that none of the 400 students at the school were any different from any other American teenager their age. She believed that ensuring safety and working with troubled teenagers was a task she could accomplish. Interestingly, with Linda's arrival, the number of fights in the school noticeably decreased, and the younger students finally breathed a sigh of relief, no longer fearing being beaten by their older counterparts.
A Childhood in the Heart of Struggle
Linda Cliatt-Wayman was born in Philadelphia and spent her childhood and youth near the ghetto, where Strawberry Mansion High School is located. As she confessed in an interview, she experienced firsthand what it meant to be weak in a school where strength, rather than knowledge, made you successful among both teachers and classmates. However, at the same time, Linda firmly believes that cruelty is just a byproduct, a consequence of the life children witness on the streets, where death is not a tragedy but a normal event that doesn't shock residents or their children.
From Troubled Schools to Strawberry Mansion High School
Before becoming the principal of one of the most dangerous schools in America, Linda worked with "problematic" schools, and her successes quickly earned her respect and the position of an observer for city schools. In 2005, for example, she worked at Rhodes High School, where she not only raised the minimum exam score by almost half but also achieved a 92% college acceptance rate for students. However, the situation at Strawberry Mansion High School was much more dire. The students not only saw no value in education but also actively resisted it. Of course, among the general population, there were also individuals who, by fate's design, found themselves at the bottom of life but still tried to obtain at least the bare minimum of education. Gradually, under Linda's guidance, the situation in the school began to improve: the number of fights decreased, student organizations were formed, and for the first time in 62 years, the school had a football team.
A Determined Effort in the Face of Adversity
Despite the visible improvements and optimistic forecasts, maintaining balance in the school remains a job for the strong-willed. Every workday begins with students being checked with metal detectors and searched for drugs. Sometimes, even an entire police squad cannot control the students during lunchtime, as they are in a constant state of war with each other. "Knowledge is your only chance," Linda concludes her daily lecture, which is broadcasted through speakers before the end of classes. Unfortunately, not every student in the school takes advantage of this opportunity, preferring to spend their days on the streets rather than in the stuffy classroom. Despite all the improvements and positive predictions, Strawberry Mansion High School continues to carry the status of one of the "most dangerous schools in America."
