Early Life and Career

François-Henri-René Allenou-Targe was born on May 7, 1832, in Angers, France. He studied law in Poitiers and began practicing as an attorney in Angers in 1853. There, he held the position of acting imperial prosecutor.

Journalism and Political Activism

In 1864, Allenou-Targe moved to Paris and took over as editor of the "Avenir national" newspaper. He also co-founded the "Revue politique" with Eugène Henri Brisson and Challemel-Lacour. However, the latter publication was shut down after only a few months.

Political Rise

Following the September Revolution of 1870, Allenou-Targe became Prefect of Maine-et-Loire, then Army Commissioner, and finally Prefect of Gironde. Aligned with Léon Michel Gambetta's principle of "defense outrance," he resigned when conservative candidates prevailed in the February 8, 1871, elections.

Elected to the National Assembly of France on July 23, Allenou-Targe became a staunch supporter of Gambetta, belonging to the "Union républicaine" faction. In 1871, he helped establish the "République française" newspaper, which promoted Gambetta's policies.

Ministerial Roles

When Gambetta became Prime Minister of France on November 14, 1881, he appointed Allenou-Targe as Minister of Finance. Following Gambetta's departure on January 26, 1882, Allenou-Targe joined Brisson's ministry as Minister of the Interior (April 6, 1885 - January 7, 1886).
