Frank Auerbach, a British avant-garde artist, was born on April 29, 1931, in Germany. He is known as a renowned British artist. Auerbach, who has Jewish ancestry, was a talented young boy. In 1939, he was sent to the Faversham School in England for exchange program education. However, the outbreak of war resulted in him losing contact with his family forever. In 1947, Frank Auerbach became a British citizen and began searching for work in the field of art.
Early Career and Education
Auerbach initially made his mark in the theater world, working at the Tavistock and Torch theaters. Although he achieved success on stage, he did not find fulfillment in this form of art. He saw his future in painting and began creating imaginary paintings, relying solely on his intuition and instinct. In order to refine his technique and knowledge, the aspiring artist enrolled in the Saint Martin's School of Art, where his first mentor and teacher was David Bomberg. During his studies, Auerbach focused on the techniques of Paul Cézanne and incorporated several of his approaches into his early works. After completing his studies, Frank Auerbach enrolled in the Royal College of Art in London, where he was a diligent student, impressing his teachers with his complex and serious works.
Artistic Style and Achievements
Auerbach primarily focused on portrait painting, but his works significantly deviated from the traditional representation of this genre. He depicted his subjects with thick and bold brushstrokes, making it sometimes difficult to discern the identities of the individuals portrayed. However, his paintings left a strong and vibrant impression. In 1973, Auerbach made his debut with a collection in Milan. In addition to portraiture, Auerbach also engaged in the decoration of various spaces and was the designer of the British Pavilion at the 17th Venice Biennale. Frank Auerbach established his name through his extraordinary and vivid artwork. He never deliberately chose his models, often painting his friends and acquaintances.
