Designer who built a paper boat

Frank Bolter, a German conceptual designer, has repeatedly tried to amaze the world with his unusual projects. One of his notable creations was a paper boat that could carry a person. Bolter delighted the audience by floating on his makeshift boat for some time. Unfortunately, the boat eventually proved to be just what it was – a paper boat.

A designer and conceptual artist

Frank Bolter is a designer and conceptual artist who has consistently delighted the public with his eccentric ideas. In 2011, he built a boat using Tetra Pak milk cartons. However, the boat quickly sank. Interestingly, this was not Bolter's first project of this kind - a year prior, he also built a paper boat.

An event in London

In 2010, in London, Bolter organized an event that resembled a great show. After participating in the DRIFT10 exhibition, London's Biennial, the designer headed straight to St Katherines Dock on the Thames Embankment. Bolter and a few young assistants laid out a large sheet of white cardboard on the pier. Volunteers worked efficiently, and soon the amazed audience witnessed the familiar technique of origami unfolding before their eyes. Right before their eyes, a classic origami boat was folded from the enormous sheet. Bolter supervised the work, taking measurements, running from one end of the sheet to the other, and giving advice. The young people worked with jokes and laughter, and it was particularly amusing to watch them carefully crease the paper folds. Eventually, a quite substantial but still fragile classic origami boat stood on the dock. The height of the boat's sides was taller than the average human height, its length was several meters, and it was hard to believe that this delicate vessel could withstand the weight of a person. Nevertheless, Frank Bolter boarded his paper boat, which glided on the water of the Thames with the help of a tugboat.

A milk carton boat in Leipzig

Bolter's next project, a boat made from Tetra Pak milk cartons, was built in Leipzig, Germany, and launched into the Kark-Heine Canal. Unfortunately, this boat was not as stable as the first one. It tipped to the right and sank, leaving the courageous captain with no choice but to go down with his ship. It is worth noting that this boat was also constructed using the origami technique. It is also worth mentioning that Bolter's project had an ecological purpose - by building his boat from Tetra Pak cartons, he aimed to draw attention to the "throwaway mentality of the West."
