Lillian Brown, a 103-year-old British woman, is one of the four oldest sisters in Britain. She celebrated her 103rd birthday on January 23, 2015. Her twin sisters, Dorothy Thompson and Ellen George, turned 96, while the fourth sister, Sylvia Sturges, is currently "only" 91 years old. The Brown sisters, Lillian, Dorothy, Ellen, and Sylvia, have proven to everyone around them that they are still young at heart. They recently celebrated their combined 386th birthday together, with Lillian jokingly suggesting that they all go to a nightclub.
Growing up in Northampton, the sisters, whose maiden name is Clark, were raised by their parents during the Victorian era. Today, Lillian, Dorothy, and Sylvia live in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, while Ellen resides in Northampton. Together, the sisters have six children, 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and even one great-great-grandchild.
Lillian celebrated her 103rd birthday in her home, where she lives with her 75-year-old daughter, Valerie Harrison. Lillian attributes her longevity to maintaining a positive mindset and enjoying life. She says, "We don't think about death, we keep a joyful outlook and just live. We love to have an extra drink and never deny ourselves a glass of wine when we have small parties." Though she admits she has become less agile with age, Lillian remains happy and content. She says, "I have lost my independence, and it can get a bit boring, but apart from that, I am very happy to have reached 103."
Lillian's daughter Valerie believes that Lillian and her sisters have lived such long lives because they are all "spirited" women. Valerie recalls how they once discussed going to a nightclub after their birthday celebration but ultimately decided against it. She says, "All the sisters worked hard for themselves. My mother's husband died when he was 40, so she took over the family business. All these women are very lovely and not afraid to speak their minds. They don't hold back. All five sisters are quite adventurous. They have had their fair share of sorrows in life, but they always pick themselves up and move forward."
Sylvia and Dorothy, who still take care of themselves, reside in the same retirement home as their sister Lillian. When they were younger, the twins both worked in clothing stores, while Sylvia was a homemaker. Lillian, on the other hand, managed a pub after her husband's death and later switched to the construction business.
The previous record holders for the oldest siblings in the world were Jack Steffam, Clara Goldsmith, Belle Dell, and Anne Goldsmith from the Steffam family in the UK. With a combined age of 388 years, their record was broken when Jack passed away in September 2011. With his death, the Clark sisters, whose combined age is currently 386 years, became the oldest living siblings in the world. They are preparing for their record to be officially recognized by the Guinness World Records.
A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records stated, "The record for the highest combined age of siblings was invalidated due to the unfortunate death of Jack Steffam in 2011. We have received a request to award the title of new record holders from a family member or someone representing the interests of the sisters in Harboro. Therefore, our record-keeping team will consider this application."
