Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Fritz Buchser was born into a humble farming family in Switzerland. As a young man, he pursued a trade as a piano and organ maker in Solothurn and Bern while simultaneously studying painting. In 1847, a pivotal journey through Paris to Italy solidified his decision to become a full-time artist.

Military Service and Artistic Training

Buchser enlisted in the papal Swiss Guard in Rome, which granted him the opportunity to attend the Academy of St. Luke and hone his artistic skills. In 1848, he joined Giuseppe Garibaldi's forces in their fight for Italian unification. Subsequent study trips to Paris and Antwerp further enriched his education.

Travels and Artistic Success

In 1852-53, Buchser resided in Spain, where he established himself as a renowned painter. He embarked on a daring equestrian expedition to Fes, Morocco, in 1858. From 1866-1871, he traveled extensively in the United States, even painting a portrait of the "master of California," his fellow Swiss immigrant John Sutter.

Controversial Paintings and Legacy

Buchser's paintings depicting the plight of African Americans during his time in the US evoked mixed reactions in New York and Washington, D.C. Back in Switzerland, he focused on teaching drawing to renowned artist Kuno Amie. Buchser played a pivotal role in the founding of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors, and Architects (GSMBA) in 1865.

Artistic Output and Preservation

Buchser's prolific output boasts an estimated 1,000 oil paintings, including 300 completed masterpieces and numerous oil sketches. His works primarily reside in the Art Museums of Solothurn and Basel, serving as a testament to his artistic legacy.
