Frank Morgan, born Francis Phillip Wuppermann in New York City in 1890, came from an affluent family with 11 siblings. His father distributed Amargo de Angostura, a popular Venezuelan spirit. After completing his education, Morgan and his brother, Ralph, embarked on their show business careers.

Broadway Debut and Film Transition:

In 1916, Morgan made his screen debut in "The Suspect." A year later, he starred in "Raffles the Amateur Cracksman" alongside John Barrymore. Morgan's performance established his signature role: a middle-aged, reserved character with a kind heart.

Hollywood Success:

Morgan's career flourished in the 1930s with notable roles in films such as "Manhandled," "The Man Who Found Himself," and "Secrets of the French Police." In 1934, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in "The Affairs of Cellini." Another Oscar nomination followed for his supporting role in "Tortilla Flat."

The Wizard of Oz and Iconic Status:

Despite being on-screen for only a few minutes in "The Wizard of Oz," Morgan's performance as the Wizard, Professor Marvel, and the Gatekeeper remains unforgettable. His portrayal of the enigmatic character cemented his status as a Hollywood icon.

Personal Life and Challenges:

In 1914, Morgan married Alma Muller, with whom he remained happily married until his death. Towards the end of his life, Morgan struggled with alcoholism, but it did not hinder his dedication to his craft.

Final Days and Legacy:

During filming of "Annie Get Your Gun" in 1949, Morgan experienced heart problems and passed away shortly after. His role was taken over by Louis Calhern. Morgan was laid to rest at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. His career spanned over 100 films, earning him numerous awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
