Biography of Frank Zamboni

Frank Joseph Zamboni Jr. was an American inventor who became famous for his renowned ice resurfacer, or ice machine. Before Zamboni invented his ice machine in 1949, ice on American rinks was restored manually. Today, his name is not only associated with the invention, but it is also the name of one of the world's best ice resurfacer manufacturers, 'Zamboni'.

Early Life and Career

Frank Joseph Zamboni Jr. was born in 1901 in Eureka, Utah, United States, into a family of Italian immigrants. He grew up near Pocatello, Idaho, where his parents bought a farm. At the age of 19, he moved with his family to the suburbs of Los Angeles. It was there that Frank, along with his brother George, started working as an auto mechanic. Later, he studied in Chicago, where he learned about business. In 1922, Frank and his younger brother Lawrence opened their own business. In 1927, the Zamboni brothers began producing ice blocks, and this ice business continued until the late 1930s when they sold it, keeping only the refrigeration equipment. With this equipment, the brothers decided to open their own skating rink. The rink was opened in 1940 and became very popular, partly because of the quality of the ice surface. The rink still operates to this day and is still owned by the Zamboni family.

Invention of the Ice Resurfacer

It was known that maintaining the ice surface at the rink required a lot of time and effort. At some point, Frank realized that it was time to mechanize the manual labor. In 1949, he invented a machine that smoothed and leveled the ice, and in just 15 minutes, this miracle machine did what previously took five people an hour and a half. This was a significant breakthrough. The machine was called an ice resurfacer, and Frank Zamboni received a patent for his invention in 1953. Zamboni himself only thought about the needs of his own rink and did not expect such high demand for his invention. However, when the Norwegian figure skating star Sonja Henie saw how the machine worked, she immediately ordered two from Zamboni. Soon, the demand for Frank Zamboni's ice resurfacers became so high that the 'Frank J. Zamboni & Co.' company, which started as a small family business in Paramount, began to thrive. An additional factory was opened in Brantford, Ontario, and an office was established in Switzerland. The 'Zamboni' brand of ice machines became the number one in the world for ice manufacturing equipment. Later, the word 'Zamboni' became almost synonymous with ice resurfacers.

Legacy and Later Years

The ice machines created by Frank received significant publicity thanks to Sonja Henie, a figure skating legend and movie star. The real triumph came after the 1960 Olympic Games when orders for ice resurfacers started coming in from all over the world. Frank Zamboni lived until the age of 87 and passed away from lung cancer on July 27, 1988, just two months after his wife. Over the years, Frank's company sold over 10,000 ice resurfacing machines. The 10,000th 'Zamboni' was presented to the 'Montreal Canadiens' club in 2012. Frank Zamboni was inducted into the Figure Skating Hall of Fame, and in January 2013, on the occasion of his 112th birthday, Google dedicated one of its doodles to him. 'I Wanna Drive A Zamboni' is the name of a song by the 'Gear Daddies' band, which tells the story of a person dreaming of driving a 'Zamboni'. One of the schools in Paramount, called Frank J. Zamboni School, is named after the inventor.
