Early Life and EducationFrançois Bayrou was born into a modest farming family in Pau, France. He pursued classical literature at the University of Bordeaux, graduating at the age of 23.
Political Career
Bayrou joined the centrist Union for French Democracy (UDF) and served as a deputy for the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. As a Christian Democrat and practicing Catholic, he advocated for the separation of church and state. He held various ministerial posts, including Minister of Education and Science under Prime Ministers Édouard Balladur and Alain Juppé.
UDF Leadership
In 1998, Bayrou became the President of the UDF. He led the party through a tumultuous period of divisions and internal struggles. Despite these challenges, the UDF achieved modest success in regional and European elections.
Presidential Candidacies
Bayrou ran as the UDF candidate in the 2002 presidential election, finishing fourth. In 2007, he emerged as a surprise contender, surging in the polls as a centrist alternative to the left-wing Ségolène Royal and conservative Nicolas Sarkozy.
