František Běhounek: A Scientist and Explorer
Early Life and EducationFrantišek Běhounek, a renowned scientist and physicist, was born in the Czech Republic. He pursued his studies at the University of Prague and the University of Paris, where he had the privilege of working in Marie Curie's laboratory. Curie's research on radioactivity greatly influenced Běhounek's future scientific endeavors.
Career in Nuclear Physics
Upon his return to Prague in 1922, Běhounek established the Institute of Radiology with Curie's support. He conducted extensive research on uranium mines in Jáchymov, studying the effects of electricity and radioactivity on the atmosphere.
Arctic Expeditions
Běhounek participated in two notable Arctic expeditions in the 1920s. He joined Roald Amundsen's expedition to the North Pole in 1926, where he worked on Spitsbergen. In 1928, he took part in Umberto Nobile's expedition aboard the airship "Italia." After the airship crashed, Běhounek and the crew endured a perilous period stranded on ice and were eventually rescued by the Soviet icebreaker "Krasin."
Scientific Legacy
From 1933 to 1954, Běhounek continued his scientific work at institutes in Prague. In 1954, he became a professor at the Czech Technical University. He was also appointed head of the dosimetry department at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1956.
Běhounek's scientific contributions spanned the fields of nuclear physics, radiology, and dosimetry. He authored numerous books and articles, including "Tragedy in the Arctic Ocean (Airship to the North Pole)."
Cultural Significance
Běhounek's experiences in the Arctic expeditions captured the public's imagination. In the 1969 Soviet-Italian film "The Red Tent," Yuri Vizbor portrayed Běhounek's role in the "Italia" expedition.
