Early Life and Education
Václav Hertl was born in the Czech Republic into a musical family. His brother, Rudolf Hertl, was also a distinguished musician. Hertl began his musical education at the Prague Conservatory, where he studied double bass with František Černý and later conducting with Václav Talich and composition with Jaroslav Řídký.
Professional Career
Hertl's professional career spanned over several decades. From 1929 to 1935, he performed as a double bassist in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. He then joined the Prague Radio Orchestra, where he remained until 1950. From 1950 to 1961, Hertl served as the conductor of the Brno Radio Orchestra.
Teaching and Achievements
In addition to his performing career, Hertl also pursued a successful teaching career. He became a professor at the Prague Academy of Music in 1951 and later at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in 1954. He was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in 1966.
