Biography of Franz Boffo

Franz (Francesco) Karlovich Boffo (1780, Italy - 1867, Odessa) was an Italian architect and the author of many outstanding projects in Russia. He lived and worked in Odessa for over 40 years (from 1820 to 1861). In 1823, his famous project, the Kamenaya Staircase, was built in Taganrog, connecting Greek Street with the waterfront.

Architectural Achievements

Franz Boffo was responsible for the design and construction of the most prominent and representative ensembles and buildings in the central part of Odessa, which have become the city's hallmark. Some of his notable works include the Vorontsov Palace, the former presence buildings on the semicircular Primorsky Boulevard Square (designed by architect A.I. Melnikov, 1826), the famous Potemkin Stairs (1841), the old stock exchange building - now the city council building (1828-1834, in collaboration with G.I. Torichelli), and magnificent palaces such as the former Governor-General's residence (1826, now the Center for Children's Creativity on Primorsky Boulevard, 9, 1829-1830).

Franz Boffo was one of the first architects to develop the city with profitable multi-story houses. The building at Pushkinskaya Street, 6 (1835) is the oldest "high-rise" building in the city.

Legacy

More than 30 buildings designed by Boffo have survived to this day. These include Pushkinskaya, 3 (1830s), Sadovaya, 1 (1847), Zhukovskogo, 39 (1836), Grecheskaya, 35 (1832), and Chaykovskogo Lane, 8 (1844) - Boffo's own house. In accordance with his project (1843), a new two-story stone building in the classical style was constructed for the gymnasium in Taganrog.

Franz K. Boffo passed away in 1867 and was buried in Odessa, at the First Christian Cemetery (destroyed in 1930).
