The Life and Military Career of Klyuki-von-Klugenau
Early Life and Russian ServiceBorn into a renowned military family, Klyuki-von-Klugenau embraced a career in arms. In 1818, he switched allegiance to the Russian Empire, joining the 8th Jaeger Regiment as a lieutenant.
War with Persia and Bravery
In 1820, Klyuki-von-Klugenau transferred to the Georgian Grenadier Regiment. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Elisabethpol, earning the Order of Saint George 4th Class for his valor.
Conflicts in the Caucasus Mountains
As major of the Yerevan Carabineer Regiment, Klyuki-von-Klugenau participated in the 1829 campaign in Asia Minor, where he was awarded the Golden Sword for Bravery. During the expedition against the Lesghians, he sustained wounds at the Storm of Zakataly.
Leadership in Dagestan
From 1831 onwards, Klyuki-von-Klugenau played a pivotal role in the operations against the rebels in Dagestan. He commanded the forces in Northern Dagestan, and sucessively rose to the command of the Kurin and Apsheron Infantry Regiments.
Promotion to General and Expeditions
In 1834, Klyuki-von-Klugenau was promoted to Major General. He commanded the 1st Brigade of the 19th Infantry Division, and later became the Governor of Aghalkalak Province. His energetic measures prevented the spread of the bubonic plague.
Further Commands and Battles
Klyuki-von-Klugenau assumed the command of the 2nd Brigade of the 20th Infantry Division and the left flank of the Caucasian Line. He narrowly escaped death during the expedition against the village of Chirkey. In 1840, he defeated a vast rebel force at Gimry.
Re-appointment and Responsibilities in Dagestan
In 1841, Klyuki-von-Klugenau was reappointed as commander of the 1st Brigade of the 19th Infantry Division, with the additional role of Commander of Troops in Northern Dagestan. His strength of character and leadership were tested during the events of 1842-1843 in Dagestan.
Later Years and High Commands
In 1844, Klyuki-von-Klugenau became a Lieutenant General. He participated in the expedition to Dargo, where his charisma and bravery inspired his men. From 1845 to 1849, he commanded the 19th Infantry Division. He subsequently joined the Guards Corps and led the 9th Infantry Division.
Legacy and Family
After more than 30 years of dedicated service in the Caucasus, Klyuki-von-Klugenau passed away in 1851, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional military leadership. He was married to Anna Efimovna Vinogradskaya, and had three sons who all followed in their father's footsteps as military officers.
