Fraue Ava: A Pioneering Religious Poetess

Early Life

Fraue Ava was an Austrian Benedictine nun and religious poetess. Little is known about her early life, except that she was married and had two sons, Hartmann and Heinrich.

Monastic Journey

In her later years, Ava retreated to a monastery and took monastic vows. She is commonly identified with Ava of Göttweig Abbey near Krems or Melk Abbey. It is believed that her sons became priests, offering her spiritual guidance in her monastic life.

Literary Contributions

Despite not knowing Latin, Ava wrote several religious poems in Middle High German. She penned poetic retellings of the Gospels, incorporating the story of the Antichrist and a depiction of the Last Judgment.

The Vorau Manuscript

Ava's works are preserved in the Vorau Manuscript, which was compiled in the 12th century. In 1849, Franz Xaver Diemer published her poems in his collection "Gedichte des 11 und 12 Jahrhunderts."

Legacy and Recognition

While her life remained veiled in mystery, Fraue Ava's writing left an enduring legacy. Her religious poems not only provided spiritual nourishment but also showcased the literary brilliance of female voices in the Middle Ages.
