Frederic Back

Frederik Bak is an award-winning Canadian animator. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Knight of the National Order of Quebec.
Early Career
Bak joined the animation studio of the National Canadian Television in 1952 and has worked there ever since.
Noteworthy Works
One of Bak's notable works is the large stained glass window "L'histoire de la musique ? Montr?al" (The History of Music in Montreal). This piece was commissioned for a wall niche at the Place-des-Arts metro station in Montreal and was inaugurated on December 20, 1987. It was the first commissioned artwork for the Montreal metro.
Academy Awards
Bak's film "Tout rien" (All Nothing) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1980. He won the award for "Crac" (Bach!) in 1982. In 1987, he received another Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for "L'Homme qui plantait des arbres" (The Man Who Planted Trees). He was nominated once more for Best Animated Short Film in 1994 for "Le fleuve aux grandes eaux" (The Great River).
Other Honors
In 1989, Bak was nominated for a Governor General's Award for "L'Homme qui plantait des arbres" in the Children's Literature: Illustration category. He received the Eco-Hero Media Award at the 2004 Planète en Folie International Festival of Environmental Films.
Recognition and Honors
Frederik Bak was named a Knight of the National Order of Quebec in 1989 and an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990.
