Heir to the Danish Throne
In 1847, Christian's father was elected heir to the Danish throne, making Christian the prince of Denmark. After his confirmation in 1860, he received a military education and attended Oxford University in 1863.
Upon his father's accession to the throne later that year, Christian returned to Denmark as crown prince. He held a seat in the State Council and assisted his father in governing the country.
Marriage to Princess Louise of Sweden
In July 1868, Christian was engaged to Princess Louise of Sweden, the daughter of King Charles XV. The marriage was intended to strengthen relations between Denmark and Sweden. They married in Stockholm on July 28, 1869.
King of Denmark
Christian became King of Denmark on January 29, 1906, after the death of his father. He was known for his liberal views, but his health was failing by the time he ascended to the throne.
