Fridolin Anderwert: A Prominent Swiss Politician
Early Life and EducationFridolin Anderwert was born in Switzerland and pursued higher education at the University of Leipzig, where he studied History and Philosophy. He subsequently embarked on legal studies at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin.
Legal and Political Career
After completing his education, Anderwert began practicing law in 1851. He served as a District Judge from 1853 to 1856, and from 1861, he became a member of the Cantonal Parliament of Thurgau.
Cantonal Reforms and Education
Anderwert played a pivotal role in the revision of the Thurgau Constitution in 1868, serving as Chairman of the Constitutional Council. His efforts resulted in numerous reforms, including increased teachers' salaries and the establishment of educational institutions.
Federal Politics
From 1863, Anderwert was a member of the Swiss National Council, representing the left wing of the Radical Democratic Party. He served as President of the Council in 1870. As a member of the Revision Committee, he actively participated in revising the Swiss Federal Constitution, advocating for legal unification, facultative referendum, freedom of religion, and the prohibition of Jesuits.
Federal Judge and Cabinet Member
In 1874, Anderwert was appointed a Federal Judge and President of the Court of Appeals. He was also a candidate for the Federal Council in 1872 and 1875. In 1875, he was elected to the Council and headed the Department of Justice and Police.
Presidency and Controversy
In 1880, Anderwert became Vice President of Switzerland and was subsequently elected President for the year 1881. However, his presidency was marred by a campaign of slanderous rumors in the press, which accused him of frequenting brothels.
Depression and Suicide
The allegations and resulting depression took a severe toll on Anderwert's well-being. On December 25, 1881, he committed suicide by shooting himself.
