Academic Background and Early Career
Friedhelm Wachs is a German journalist, political activist, and consultant. From 1969 to 1982, he attended high school in West Berlin. He later pursued political science and business administration at the Free University of Berlin, graduating in 1988. In 2007, Wachs completed an MBA from the Leipzig Graduate School of Management. He was awarded the Schmalenbach Prize for his research in business administration.
Journalism and Activism
In 1984-1985, Wachs served as Vice President for Media Relations for the 12th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow. From 1985 to 1989, he worked as an editor for the "Tageszeitung" newspaper, specializing in Eastern European and news affairs. He published numerous articles about socialist countries and helped establish the newspaper's Moscow office.
Business Leadership and Consulting
From 1989 to 1992, Wachs was President and CEO of "Rönnau und Wachs," a market research firm focused on non-food products, media, IT, telecommunications, and office equipment. In 1993, he became President and CEO of "Wachscommunication." The firm, among its achievements, developed Germany's environmental protection concept presented at the 1995 World Climate Conference in Berlin. A Berlin Senate representative stated that "Wachs is a significant partner for our environmental conference."
In 2003, Wachs consulted with the Leipzig administration on their bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. He publicly supported the bid, explaining its importance for regional development. Leipzig won the national round and became one of nine candidate cities. Burkhardt Aimer, head of the Lübeck "Home City Association," described Wachs as a "renowned expert in regional development and city marketing."
Community Involvement
Wachs holds leadership positions in various commercial organizations, including Hansen & Heinrich AG. He serves as Vice President of the German Junior Chamber and is a senator of the Junior Chamber International. In 2009, this international organization recognized Wachs as their most distinguished leader, first in Europe and later worldwide.
Publications
Wachs has authored several publications, including a chapter in "Revolution in Moscow: The Putsch and the Collapse of the Soviet Union" (1991), a contribution to "The Poverty of Nations: A Handbook on the Debt Crisis from Argentina to Zaire" (1987), and others. He is also the author of the books "If I Only Knew..." (2010), "Love!" (2010), and a co-author of "The Bohemian Baths: Karlsbad, Marienbad, Franzensbad" (1993).
