Friedrich Kohlrausch: German Physicist and Historian

Early Career

Friedrich Wilhelm Georg Kohlrausch was born on October 14, 1840, in Rinteln, Germany. He was a German physicist and historian who made significant contributions to the field of electromagnetism.

In 1878, Kohlrausch became an assistant to Professor August Kundt in Strasbourg. While there, he lectured on theoretical physics and conducted research on optics, acoustics, and magnetism.

Technical Electrical Applications

In the 1880s, Kohlrausch shifted his focus to the technical applications of electricity. In 1884, he became the first professor of electrical engineering at the technical school in Hanover. In 1892, he was appointed the school's rector.

Director of the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt

After the death of Hermann von Helmholtz, Kohlrausch became the director of the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (Imperial Physical-Technical Institute) in Berlin in 1895. He held this position until 1905.

Scientific Contributions

Electrical Measurements

Kohlrausch developed methods for measuring electrical currents and resistances, including his famous Kohlrausch bridge for measuring electrolyte resistance. He also invented instruments for recording changes in the Earth's magnetic field.

Electromagnetism

Kohlrausch conducted research in electromagnetism, including studies on the behavior of ions in electrolytes. He formulated the Kohlrausch Law, which describes the independence of ion movement in electrolytes.

Physical Chemistry of Solutions

Kohlrausch made contributions to the physical chemistry of solutions. He proposed a method for determining the electrical resistance of electrolytes and established the law of independent ion movement in electrolytes.

Personal Life

Friedrich Kohlrausch married Elizabeth Voigt in 1868. They had two children, including daughter Helen Kohlrausch, who married American physicist Arthur Day.
