Early Life and Education
Zurab Avalishvili was born in 1876 in Tbilisi, into the princely Avalishvili family. He graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1900 with a gold medal and a degree in law. He furthered his education at the Sorbonne from 1901 to 1903.
Diplomatic and Political Career
In 1917, Avalishvili was elected to the Constituent Assembly. However, he offered his services to the Georgian Democratic Republic. Upon his return to Georgia in 1918, Avalishvili became the chief foreign affairs advisor. He played a key role in establishing close relations with Germany, which led to the latter's recognition of the Georgian Democratic Republic's sovereignty.
Academic and Legal Contributions
Avalishvili's legal education made him a significant contributor to the drafting of the Georgian constitution. He also played an instrumental role in the establishment of Tbilisi State University, where he taught from 1918 to 1921.
Exile and Literary Work
After the Sovietization of Georgia, Avalishvili emigrated to Germany. He became a co-founder of the Georgian Association in Germany and worked for the journals "Georgica" and "Byzantium." He authored numerous articles on the Caucasus, Georgian history and literature, diplomacy, and more.
Legacy
Prince Zurab Davidovitch Avalishvili passed away in 1944 in Schwarzenfeld, Germany. In 1993, his remains were repatriated to Georgia and interred in the Tbilisi Pantheon of State and Public Figures. Avalishvili's legacy as an outstanding Georgian historian, diplomat, and jurist continues to be revered today.
