Friedrich Kurschat, a native of East Prussia (at the time part of Lithuania), was a renowned scholar of the Lithuanian language. He held a professorship at the University of Königsberg.

Kurschat's major contributions to Lithuanian linguistics include:"Beiträge zur Kunde der litauischen Sprache" (1843-1849), a comprehensive study on the Lithuanian language, featuring a groundbreaking analysis of Lithuanian accentuation in the second volume, "Laut und Tonlehre der litauischen Sprache."
"Grammatik der litauischen Sprache" (1876), an influential grammar of Lithuanian.
"Deutsch-litauisches und litauisch-deutsches Wörterbuch" (1870, 1883), a comprehensive bi-directional dictionary.
Collaborations and Translations
In 1825, Kurschat collaborated with Liudvikas Rėza to publish a collection of Lithuanian folk songs. In 1843, he revised and re-published these songs under the title "Dainos oder litauische Volkslieder."
Kurschat also edited the Lithuanian New Testament, which was published by the Canstein Bible Society in Halle in 1865.
