Friedrich Traugott Wahlen: Pioneer in Agriculture and Politics
Early Life and EducationFriedrich Traugott Wahlenwas born in Switzerland and pursued his passion for agriculture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. After obtaining his diploma and doctorate, he embarked on an adventurous journey abroad.
International Experiences
Wahlen lived and worked in Germany, the Netherlands, and England before settling in Canada in 1923. During his time in Canada, he met and married his Swiss compatriot, Helen Rosalie Hopf. While there, he held a position in the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture.
Return to Switzerland
Upon his return to Switzerland in 1929, Wahlen became the director of the Federal Institute of Agricultural Research in Zurich until 1943. He also assumed the role of editor of the "Grüne" newspaper from 1936 to 1941. From 1943 to 1949, he taught agronomy at his alma mater, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
International Leadership
From 1949 onward, Wahlen served in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), first in Washington, D.C. and later in Rome. His contributions to global agriculture were recognized internationally.
Federal Council
In December 1958, Wahlen was elected to the Federal Council of Switzerland, the country's governing body. During his tenure, he advocated for environmental protection and social justice.
Post-Retirement Activities
After his retirement in 1965, Wahlen remained politically active, including his involvement in campaigns for women's suffrage. In 1982, he was awarded the Albert Einstein Medal for his lifetime achievements.
