Although Eckel was initially selected for the tournament squad, he only featured in three group stage matches due to an injury sustained by defender Josef Posipal. Posipal returned to the starting lineup for the crucial semi-final and final matches.

After the World Cup, Horst Eckel continued his domestic career with Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen. He retired from professional football in 1965 and later served as a coach and manager for various clubs.
